Actuary Grind

What a great morning! The light snowfall this winter morn blessed me with the opportunity of ice. I must say, it has been a long time since I’ve spun out.

And by that, I mean about an hour. Spinning out of control on a narrow street is quite a frightening situation. Especially when you grind up next to the curb. But this is not the point of my post. Just keep the word “grind” in your head.

Returning back to my humble abode, I had a lot of things on my mind (including the recent spin out). Everything dealing with entrepreneurship, this blog, startups who have contacted me, and the usual daily grind. Ah, there’s that word again.

One thing in particular which boggles my brain is the fact that, as an actuary, I have actuarial exams to pass in order to keep my credentials in check with the insurance industry. These exams are incredibly difficult, with a 30% pass rate and a requirement of about 100 study hours for every hour of the test (an average of 300-500 hours per exams). So this all got me thinking. Sure there are actuarial exam resources and websites which can help you pass the tests, but the only incentive that they offer is a score. That’s what you strive for as an actuary – a passing score. I felt something missing.

Thus, Actuary Grind was born. I used to have friends in high school who were dedicated players of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, and they would always talk about “grinding” for gold or other valuable in-game items. Combining the idea of the actuarial exams and the grinding concept from World of Warcraft, I came up with Actuary Grind – a website focused on rewarding you for answering questions correctly. The reward would be some type of site currency which could then be redeemed for actuary study books, formula sheets, exam prep courses, and etc…

The idea is still in its developmental stages. I’ve purchased www.ActuaryGrind.com as well as setup the Twitter @ActuaryGrind. So if you are interested in pursuing this idea or perhaps have an interest in such a service, please feel free to reach out to me at talk@zacharybarden.com.

Salethug CRM

Another week, another idea! Well, more like 3 days, but you get the idea.

So the other night I was up late facilitating my brainstorming ritual at about 2 o’clock in the morning and after I had crushed up enough old business cards and built several business card sculptures, I began to infamously mix and match letters until I got something interesting.

Everything sounded like gibberish. Aksdjf, giela, fiwks, cmrow, and so on. Finally, I came up with one word – and that was at about 2:45. The word was “sale” and that got me nowhere (okay, 50%, calm down). I spent the next twenty or so minutes trying to scalp together random letters and see if they made any sense or complemented “sale” in any way. I came up with “fire sale”, “dream sale”, “IRA sale”, and then “thug sale”. After playing around, I reversed the words and had “sale fire”, “sale dream”, and “sale thug” (having thrown out “IRA sale”). Since Salefire and Saledream were both taken, I moved onto the next option: Salethug. And thus, an idea was born.

When I think of sales and thugs, three ideas pop into my head: a discount deal website, a human trafficking site dedicated to the arbitrage of felonious thugs, aaaand a customer relationship management system. As there are far too many deal sites out there already, and given the fact that human trafficking is, well illegal, I found a CRM system to be the best use of this name.

So I went and purchased the domain name www.Salethug.com and, due to the fact that I have no time whatsoever to dedicate to the development of a CRM, I put the domain on Sedo. You can look into purchasing it by navigating to the website itself (www.Salethug.com).

If you are looking for professional consultation on this idea, whether it be for business purposes or CRM development, feel free to reach out to me via email at talk@zacharybarden.com.

Angel on Me

If you’ve ever attended Church or some type of religious service, you know how incredibly generous many churchgoers are. A bake sale, a Knights of Columbus fundraiser, and yes – religious gifts – all encompass what my next idea is about: religious profiteering. Inherently wrong? I do not think so, as you are advocating a cause which helps facilitate the beliefs of your customers.

I present to you, Angel on Me (www.angelonme.com), a religious accessory gift that has an important, protective meaning behind it. Stemming from the famous Angel on my Shoulder pins, this product would entail a special purpose. Whether it is for your niece’s communion or your nephew’s confirmation, an Angel on Me pin would be the most precious gift, providing a stark yet subtle sign of one’s religious affiliation and protection.

This is a sample item from the shipment I had come in. The idea itself has marvelous potential and is all ready to go!

Your potential market with this idea involves not only the local parishes and chapels, but the online religious consumer market as well! You can reach hundreds of thousands of people who just simply cannot find a small but meaningful faith-based gift. If the beauty of the pin itself is not enough to convince any customer, the promise attached along with it is worth considering: Wear an angel on your shoulder, to guide you thru the days and nights, and brighten your life.

Once again, I have constructed the Blueprint necessary to start such a business, as well as an already identified supplier, a unique domain name (www.angelonme.com), and of course, important marketing strategies to advance your business and adhere to your plan of action.
